The state’s people speak a wide variety of languages. Knowing English or Hindi is enough to get you by in Manipur.

DO
• Wear modest clothes, especially for temple visits.
• Protect yourself with sunscreen, hats and water to beat the heat during the day.
• Greet locals with a ‘namaste’ for a warmer welcome.
• Carry food and water with you as you are unlikely to find more than a dhaba along the way outside the big city.
Don’t
• Drive on the highway or rural roads beyond sundown.
• Expect clean and frequent toilet or restaurant stops on highways.
• Pack too many valuables and over-equip yourself with gadgets.
• Visit the region without prior hotel bookings.
